The day after the filing deadline is when we typically receive many calls regarding any rejected returns you may have received AFTER Tuesday, April 18 11:59 PM.
Please remember that there is a set timeframe, depending on return type, in which these rejected returns must be fixed, resubmitted and acknowledged by the IRS in order to be considered timely filed – refer to the table below.
We have also again provided the simple instructions for identifying rejected returns and mailing addresses to send returns if you are unable to fix the reject error(s) by the resubmission deadline(s).
Deadlines for Resubmission of Rejected Returns (Rejected AFTER Midnight, Tues – April 18)
Note (1) – If the return was rejected before the April 18 due date, it must have been resubmitted on or before the due date to be considered timely filed.
If you’re not able to correct the errors before the resubmission deadline listed above, you’ll need to print and mail the return. Be sure to attach IRS Form 8948 – Preparer Explanation for Not Filing Electronically to explain why the return is not being electronically filed.
Refer to IRS Where to File Paper Returns With or Without Payment | Español for mailing addresses and additional information.
How To Identify Rejects in the Desktop Program:
To easily identify if you have Federal and/or State Rejects, simply go to the Work In Progress Screen (WIP) > Exceptions / Rejects section and select the applicable line item as shown below.
- Note: If you have rejects, the count is displayed on screen and simply click to display a list of the rejected returns (double-click to open return).
